Shelton, M. 1996. Why the ill effects of divorce can be as damaging as physical abuse. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 22, 1323–1335. AbstractThe emotional abuse of a spouse by a partner is a grave social problem, yet researchers know little about how divorced parents perceive the consequences of divorce on their children. In this study, divorced mothers and fathers separately and in tandem reported the extent to which their divorce would affect each of their five children's emotional functioning. Both divorced parents' perceptions of their children's emotional functioning were significantly correlated. These findings suggest that divorced parents do not treat their children as individuals, but rather as part of a group of children in which they are only one in a series of problems.
